Crisis Prevention and Support

Everyone faces crises once in a while. Adoptive families are no exception. Families who have adopted an older child or one with special placement needs may be particularly vulnerable to stress and anxiety. Adjusting to becoming a family can be challenging.

In general, teens — adopted or not — seem to be facing increasing levels of pressure in today's society and may need extra help navigating through those difficult years.

The pressure of waiting for a child to join your family may take its toll on your relationship with your partner, or you may be facing that stress alone as a single parent. Some adoptive moms experience post-adoption depression, which is similar to post-partum depression.

If you are experiencing stress or problems that seem overwhelming or that you don't know how to handle, don't ignore it. There are services in your community that can help.

At AFABC we have a BC-wide network of Adoption Support Coordinators and volunteers. Please call them, they can help.
