Invisible Disability and Adoption; What Services and Support Lead to Greater Resiliency in Adoptive Families?

This survey has been designed to better determine what specific factors may lead to difficulty or conflict in families who have adopted a child with special needs that include an Invisible Disability.

Additionally, this research project serves to identify any positive factors that may aid in resiliency, as well as any preventative measures that can be implemented to ensure increased stability in placements.

The focus of this research is to determine what services are accessed, available, and helpful for families, and is not related to the distribution of finances, even though some of the survey questions may mention this. It is services related, rather than finance related.

Invisible Disability (sometimes referred to as invisible or hidden disability) refers to various forms of disability which are not overtly physical. This may include a number of emotional or behavioural concerns, learning disorders, birth disorders, or diagnosed mental illness which may impair an individual’s ability to function at the same level as their peers, while not presenting a physical disability.

Any information gathered from this study will remain confidential, and will only be reported in non-identifying forms.

Participants interested in becoming further involved in this study are invited to schedule an interview with Alix Little (alix.little@gov.bc.ca). As with the survey, any information gathered during the interview process will remain confidential, and will only be reported in non-identifying forms.

Please feel free to contact Alix Little if you have any questions or concerns regarding this study.
