Adopting Teens and Tweens Online Course [online course]
If you are in the process or have already adopted a teen/tween this "AEP Plus" workshop series is for you. Learn about the realities, outcomes, challenges, and joys of adopting an older child. Share stories, network with other families, and take home critical parenting strategies and resources to build success. Includes a panel of teen adoptees and their families.

Adoption and Classroom Success: Beyond the Basics [on-demand webinar]
Join us for a discussion with Heather T. Forbes, LCSW, on how to help your child succeed at school. Circumstances prior to adoption often cause adopted children to experience school, among other things, in a different framework than other kids. Orphanage care, foster care or prenatal exposure are all events that can affect behavior as a child grows. Heather presents tips and strategies on how to help your child be more successful at school, therefore easing some of the stress at home.

AEP-Online [online course]
We deliver online versions of the required education programs for the BC Ministry of Children and Family Development and for the Edmonton & Area Child and Family Services Authority. If you are a prospective parent living in a rural area, or if your work commitments are not conducive to face-to-face learning, ask your social worker if the AEP-Online is right for you.

Laughter and Tears in the First Year [webinar]
They laughed, they cried - it became a part of them. An adoptive mother of two boys tells the very real story of her family’s first year after adopting an older child. Her younger son joined her family at 7 yrs old, after spending over 5 years in multiple foster homes in BC. This mom's stories and insights bring a mix of emotion, good humour, and wisdom to her account of what was the most challenging and rewarding year of their lives. Learned during a “crash course in extreme parenting,” she shares the twelve significant lessons her adoptive family has learned to live by.

The Middle Years - Child Parent Relationship Therapy for Adoptive Families [workshop]
Parents are taught basic child-centered play therapy principles and skills in a supportive group setting. During weekly play sessions, parents gain reflective listening skills, learn how to identify and respond empathetically to their child's feelings, to set limits and give choices. The goal is for children to feel more secure and to increase their problem solving skills, self-confidence, and competency.

Pathways: Building Foundations [workshop]
Building Foundations is designed to help social workers and others directly involved with children and youth increase their comfort level in having challenging conversations with children regarding permanence; some tips in assessing a child’s readiness for adoption or other forms of permanence; unpacking the “no” especially with youth; and exploring alternative ways to find permanence for older youth.
Format: One and a half day workshop.

Safe Babies Training [workshop]
If you are planning to adopt a baby or toddler, locally or internationally, the Safe Baby Workshop Series is for you! This course is especially valuable to families open to children with prenatal exposure to drugs or alcohol. The workshops include guest speakers, information on infant care and early childhood, and certified infant/child CPR training.

Siblings in Adoption [webinar]
Are you thinking about adopting siblings? Are you concerned about how your kids will respond to your new adopted child? Join us for this exciting new two-part webinar series that focuses on the effect adoption can have on siblings. In Part 1 we look at the importance of sibling relationships and how to prepare your child and family for a new adopted child.  Part 2 then focuses on the benefit of adopting sibling groups as well as how to navigate scenarios when siblings are not adopted together.

The pace of social media uptake has led to an explosion of information, and the era of adoption secrecy and closed adoption is effectively over. Connections and meetings between adoptees and birth families can occur without consultation, detectives, red tape, letters or intermediaries. It can be as simple as a Facebook search and message sent into cyberspace with a wish and prayer.
