If you are adopting a child of a different race or culture, or if you are already parenting transracially or cross-culturally, this advanced workshop series is a must!

Participating in this workshop will better equip you to parent your transracial / cross-cultural adopted child. This workshop features interactive activities to help you better understand family identity, cultural heritage, racial identity and how to deal with racism.

Day 1 participants focus on self-awareness around their family’s cultural ocean.  Internal and external challenges will be examined as well as a focus on creating a plan to address those challenges. The importance of racial and ethnic identity and cultural permanency is discussed.

Day 2 participants will learn and leave with a cultural plan model for their child as well as a personal action plan for continuous cultural navigation throughout the lifespan.

Presenter:

Ashleigh Martinflatt, MSW, RSW has been working in the social work field since 2001.  She is a full-time instructor, in Social Work and Child and Youth Care at Vancouver Island University and she still practices in the field teaching the face to face Adoption Education Program, completing home studies and private consultation with families.  Most importantly though, Ashleigh is the proud mother of two children who joined her family through adoption from MCFD.
