AKOMA is completely SOLD OUT of tickets for Raising Healthy Black Children in a Changing World. This three-part series will take place on Sept 26 / Oct 10 / Oct 24, 2019, 7-9 pm at the Adoptive Families Association of BC offices in Burnaby. This is very exciting; however, please don't e-transfer anything to Maria as AKOMA can't accept any more participants. AKOMA will be updating participants separately in the next week.

AKOMA is proud to present a 3-part series: 

Raising Healthy Black Children in a Changing World
, for adoptive parents taking place on 3 Thursdays: Sept 26 / Oct 10 / Oct 24, 2019, from 7-9 pm. 

  • September 26 - Angela Tucker
    Angela is a public speaker, writer, adoption consultant and the Director of post-adoption services at a Amara in Seattle, WA. Angela will share her journey as a transracial adoptee and discuss her documentary, Closure
  • October 10 - Jen Nickel
    For more than 25 years, Jen has been mom to many kids through adoption, fostering and birth. Jen will present on the importance of understanding our own stages of racial development as adoptive parents in multi-racial families. 
  • October 24 - panel of black Vancouverites
    4-5 members of Vancouver's black community will talk about being and growing up black in Vancouver. Some panelists are parents, some are not, but all will bring unique and relevant perspectives. 

All sessions will be moderated by clinical counsellor and adoptive dad Tyler Milley, to help us all learn how to best support our children in developing a strong, confident sense of identity!
