This workshop is designed for those planning to adopt, foster, or care for a baby or toddler — especially if there is any risk of prenatal exposure. Learn about infant development, substance exposure, sleep issues, household and infant safety, support services, self-care, and more in this three-part online workshop.

To receive a completion certificate for this Safe Babies workshop, participants must obtain infant/child CPR/First Aid training outside of AFABC and provide their CPR/First Aid certificate to the AFABC registrar. Foster parents, please check with your resource workers on provincial and local CPR/First Aid requirements.

Format: This online workshop is composed of three 1.5-hour online sessions and three hours of self-directed homework. 

Workshop outline:

Session 1 - Prenatal exposure

  1. Understanding women and addiction
  2. Bringing home baby
  3. Stressors and self-care

Session 2 - Health and development

  1. Public health and infant development programs
  2. Infant child development
  3. Developmental red flags
  4. Infant mental health

Session 3 - FASD

  1. Introduction to FASD
  2. FASD key worker presentation
  3. Questions and discussion
  4. Personal story video

Activities: Presented in an online multi-media format, activities include: live online presentations, online group discussions, watching videos, reading articles, guest speakers from the community, and homework assignments. 

This workshop uses the Zoom online meeting platform. Please check your computers/devices compatibility here

This event will be recorded for quality assurance. Recordings will be available to participants after each session.

Facilitator: This course is taught by a Safe Babies trained online facilitator.

Audience: This workshop is directed toward adoptive and permanency parents, and referred foster parents.  We recommend that participants have taken AEP or foster parent training prior to taking Safe Babies. This workshop is for adults only.

Dates: Wednesday, October 12, 19, and Nov 2nd; from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. *Note that the third session is two weeks following the second.

Fee: $150 per person. All participants need to be registered individually in the course, and their attendance tracked by the facilitator, in order to qualify for certification.

Your First Aid training must include infant/child CPR training. Please reference the chart below to ensure that it meets the requirements for certification in this course.
