The Parenting Teens & Tweens online workshop offers an introduction to the parental joys, challenges, and typical behaviors connected with parenting a teen or tween in or from care.

The three-part online workshop will enable parents to understand teen development and provide tips and tools to support their parenting journey.

Format: This course is composed of three 1.5-hour online workshops, facilitated by an AFABC Family Support Specialist.

Course outline:

Session 1

  • Disruptions and breakdowns​

  • Experiences of children from care and the impact of transitions  ​

  • Positive identity formation ​

  • Social media: Online identity    ​

  • Sex and relationships

Session 2

  • Understanding the developing brain

  • Impact of trauma on the developing brain

  • Attachment

Session 3

  • Belonging

  • Mental health

  • Barriers to treatment

  • Mental illnesses & substance use

Activities: Presented in an online multi-media format, activities include: live online presentations, online group discussions, watching videos, reading articles, homework assignments. 

This workshop uses the MS Teams online meeting platform. The steps to join a Teams meeting can be found here.

Audience: The workshop is designed to build on learning obtained during the AEP Online course. It is recommended that the participants have completed the AEP or an equivalent adoption education program.

Dates: March 1, 8, and 15, from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm

Fee: $50 per person
