The Pathways program is designed for those who wish to develop their knowledge of effective and inclusive strategies to prepare children and youth to transition to a permanent placement through adoption, a transfer of guardianship or a permanent placement with kin.

Child-focused family recruitment is an emerging and innovative approach to permanency planning. It designs an individualized and inclusive framework around each waiting child in order to strengthen their connection to birth culture(s) and community.

The Building Foundations workshop will focus on helping social work professionals increase their skills in talking to children about permanence and preparing them to transition to a permanent placement whether through adoption, a transfer of guardianship or a permanent placement with kin.

Emphasis continues to be on honouring relational, cultural, and physical permanence with the ultimate goal of legal permanence.

This workshop will:

  • assist social workers and others in having challenging conversations about permanence with children and youth
  • offer tips in assessing a child or youth's readiness for adoption or other forms of permanence
  • consider ways to unpack the "no" especially with youth
  • explore alternate ways to find permanence for older youth

Training emphasis is on honouring relational, cultural and physical permanence with the ultimate goal of legal permanence.

Building Foundations is a two day workshop including presentations and small-group training.
