Trauma Informed Parenting: The First Year of Placement Online Workshop - Spring 2021

The first year of adoption placement can be tough - especially for parents managing kids with trauma. This online workshop is designed to provide tips and tools for trauma informed parenting in the first year of placement. The course helps parents understand the relationship between trauma and adoption. Parents will learn about the different types of trauma, how they manifest in the developing child, and strategies for parenting with a trauma-informed approach.

Format: This course is composed of three 1.5-hour online workshops and three hours of self-directed homework. In addition, the facilitator will host an optional one-hour group follow up call to support participants as they work to implement the strategies discussed in the three-part workshop.

Course outline:

Session 1 - Understanding trauma and the relationship between adoption and trauma.

  1. Understanding trauma
  2. Children in care
  3. Child/adolescent development
  4. Attachment

Session 2 - Transitioning. The first six months after placement

  1. Healing from trauma - an ecological perspective
  2. Trauma informed principles in the first six months
  3. Predictable adjustments in the first six months

Session 3 - Opportunity. Six months to one year after placement

  1. Predictable adjustments six months and beyond
  2. Trauma informed parenting principles
  3. Self-care

Activities: Presented in an online multi-media format, activities include: live online presentations, online group discussions, watching videos, reading articles, homework assignments. 

This workshop uses the Zoom online meeting platform. Please check your computers/devices compatibility here

Facilitator: This course is taught by an instructor with over 16 years in the permanency field. She holds her MSW and is a PH.D. candidate in Child and Youth Care.

Audience: Prospective and current adoptive parents.

Dates:  Tuesday, April 27th, May 4th, and May 11th from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. Optional group follow up call: Tuesday, May 18th at 7:00 PM

Fee: $95 per person.
