Parenting is challenging. Parenting a child through adoption or other forms of permanency brings an additional set of challenges as a result of the child's experience with trauma, grief, and loss. Additional issues such as prenatal exposure and attachment mean that a unique set of parenting theories, strategies, and practical tools are required to effectively navigate the parenting journey.

This training workshop provides family support facilitators and professionals with an introduction to adoption and permanency, as well as an overview of the most common issues that are experienced by adoptive children and their families. The bulk of the workshop will be spent breaking down each issue and identifying current theories, strategies, and tools so that participants are able to effectively support adoptive parents and their families. Main topics include:

  • Grief and loss
  • Trauma
  • Attachment
  • Prenatal substance exposure

Activities: Presented in an online multi-media format, activities include: a live presentation, breakout room discussions, videos, and time for questions and answers.

Format: This live, online workshop is 4 hours long with post-event, self-directed learning access to AFABC resources. The workshop uses the MS Teams online meeting platform. The steps to joining a Teams meeting can be found here.
