Indigenous adoption services
Indigenous communities have specific adoption committees and/or agencies which work to ensure that Indigenous children in care are raised in Indigenous families whenever possible, keeping them connected with their extended family and community.
Due to these unique cultural needs, the Ministry for Children and Family Development (MCFD) works with Delegated Aboriginal Agencies and communities to plan for the placement of children within their extended family, Indigenous community, or another Indigenous home outside their community.
Non-Indigenous parents wishing to adopt an Indigenous child should expect additional preparations and approval steps. Prospective adoptive parents may be required to complete a cultural education training program and participate in the creation of a cultural plan. The final approval for the placement is made by the MCFD Exceptions Committee.
