Library access

Borrowers must be current members in good standing. Non-members are welcome to browse and view our selection at our Burnaby library, but may not sign out items.

Once borrowers have signed out an item, they are responsible for returning it in good condition.

If borrowers have overdue items outstanding, no more materials will be sent out on loan until overdue materials have been returned.

Number of items

Borrowers may sign only a certain number of items at a time:

  • Six books
  • 3 DVDs or CDs

Loan periods

The loan period for items borrowed from our library is one month. The due date is written on the inside of the book on a due date slip.

Items may be renewed one time if someone else has not placed the materials on reserve. Items are renewable for one additional month. If the item has been placed on reserve, the renewal period is restricted to one additional week.

Shipping books

We’re happy to send items via postal mail to our members outside the Lower Mainland when they request items online or over the phone. Members will pay outgoing postage costs up front providing their credit card information. AFABC will pay the return postage costs – including a prepaid envelope along with the items borrowed – so that when the items are due back to us, members can simply pop them into the envelope provided and slip it into the mail.

Fees and fines

If a borrower loses the materials, they must pay the cost of replacing the items plus shipping and handling charges (from Canada: CDN $10.00/item, from USA USD$15.00/item).
