Application

The application process is somewhat similar for each adoption program, though some have specific requirements.

1. Research your adoption options.
2. Fill out an application and submit it to the adoption representative.
3. The adoption representation will review the application. They check your references, conduct a criminal record check, and complete a prior contact search through the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD).
4. You will participate in mandatory adoption training.
5. The adoption representative assigns a social worker to conduct a homestudy.

Once completed, you're now considered a waiting adoptive parent and will begin the matching process.

Adopt BC Kids program

1. Contact the Adopt BC Kids information line to get more information about adopting through the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD).
2. Apply for a BCeID, if you don't already have one.
3. Submit an application online through the Adopt BC Kids web portal.
4. An Adopt BC Kids social worker will help your gather criminal record checks, four personal references, and medical references.
5. You'll take the Adoption Education Program Online (AEP-Online).
6. Your application file will be transferred to your local MCFD office and a social worker will be assigned. Priority is given to Aboriginal families, child-specific applications, and families interested in adopting teens.
7. The local social worker will check references, complete a prior contact search, and conduct a homestudy.

Once completed, you're now a waiting adoptive parent and will begin the matching process.

Local infant program

1. Research the BC adoption agencies. Get info packs from each and interview them.
2. Sign with the agency that was the best 'fit' for you.
3. Submit an application to the agency.
4. The agency will review your application, including reference checks and a criminal record search.
5. You will take adoption training, either with the agency or through the AEP-Online.
6. The agency assigns a social worker to complete a homestudy.

Once completed, you're now a waiting adoptive parent and will begin the matching process.

International

1. Research the BC adoption agencies. Get info packs from each, learn about what country programs they offer, and interview them.
2. Sign with the agency that was the best 'fit' for you.
3. Submit an application to the agency.
4. The agency will review your application, including reference checks and a criminal record search.
5. You will take adoption training, either with the agency or through the AEP-Online.
6. The agency assigns a social worker to complete an international homestudy.
7. Each country has a unique process and specific list of required documents, which make up your dossier. The dossier verifies who you are and that you have met the country's criteria for international adoption.
8. You may need to file a sponsorship application with Citizenship and Immigration Canada.
9. Your dossier is sent to the country you're applying to adopt from.

Once completed, you're now a waiting adoptive parent and will begin the matching process.
