DNA tests, social media, and adoption
Social media, consumer DNA tests, and other innovations mean that for many people, a saliva sample or a few mouse-clicks is all it takes to uncover their heritage, their biological family, and extensive medical information. This workshop explores promises and pitfalls of the rapidly changing, technology-driven adoption landscape of the 21st century.

Safe Babies Training
If you are planning to adopt a baby or toddler, locally or internationally, the Safe Baby Workshop Series is for you! This course is especially valuable to families open to children with prenatal exposure to drugs or alcohol. The workshops include guest speakers, information on infant care and early childhood, and certified infant/child CPR training.
Format: Five 2.5 hour in-person workshops, includes infant CPR certification

Trauma Informed Parenting: The First Year of Placement Online Workshop 

The first year of adoption placement can be tough - especially for parents managing kids with trauma. This online workshop is designed to provide tips and tools for trauma informed parenting in the in the first year of placement.

This innovative online workshop will help parents understand the relationship between trauma and adoption. Parents will learn about the different types of trauma, how they manifest in the developing child, and learn strategies for parenting from a trauma-informed place.

Format: Three x 1.5 hour online workshops. This workshop uses the Adobe Connect online meeting platform. Please check your computers/devices compatibility here

Thriving and Surviving: The First Two Years 
This innovative workshop outlines the issues and behaviours that are relatively predictable in the first few years of an adoption placement. 
Families will build realistic expectations and learn hands-on strategies and skills that will prepare them for navigating this critical and often challenging time. 
Note: All participants must have completed the Adoption Education Program (AEP).
Format: One full day in-person workshop offered regionally.
Cost of Workshop: $125 for AFABC members; $135 for non-members.

Transracial and Crosscultural Adoption Parenting 
If you are adopting a child of a different race/culture or you are already parenting transracially, these workshops are a must! The workshops will address the topics of Family Identity/ Sharing Family Stories, Culture, and Heritage, Talking to Your Kids, Ages, and Stages, Being your Child's Best Ally, Stereotypes, Your Child's Positive Racial Identity, School Issues, and Dealing with Racism. Participants will leave with a toolkit of tips and techniques to expand their transracial/cross-cultural parenting skills set.
Format: Two full-day in-person workshops
Cost of Workshop: $140 for AFABC members per day; $150 for non-members per day
