They laughed, they cried - it became a part of them. An adoptive mother of two boys tells the very real story of her family’s first year after adopting an older child. Her younger son joined her family at 7 yrs old, after spending over 5 years in multiple foster homes in BC. This mom's stories and insights bring a mix of emotion, good humour, and wisdom to her account of what was the most challenging and rewarding year of their lives. The Middle Years - Child Parent Relationship Therapy for Adoptive Families [workshop]
Parents are taught basic child-centered play therapy principles and skills in a supportive group setting. During weekly play sessions, parents gain reflective listening skills, learn how to identify and respond empathetically to their child's feelings, to set limits and give choices. The goal is for children to feel more secure and to increase their problem solving skills, self-confidence, and competency.
